Been listening to Zappa's YCDTOSA vol. 3 a lot recently, and this guy is on fire! (despite those electronic drum sounds...*shudder*), and I just watched a live Zappa show (the MTV one) that I e-muled, and how old exactely is Wackerman when he was with Zappa!? He looks 18!
Anyhow, I'd like to check out more from this guy, any reccomendations? I've heard good things about the Holdsworth stuff.

There's a cool video of him at the vicfirth site. He's playing this doulbe bass pattern that is accented 16ths that is just motoring and then he starts with some tom patterns and beat modulation that sounds cool...
Check out the latest Holdsworth disc, the live one, he's really good on it. He gets a great drum sound. The YCDTOSA 3, the green one, is by far the best of the bunch IMO, it's friggin hilarious and the band is killin.

That clip of Chad on Vic Firth's website is definitely one to check out. One other comment about Chad.....not to start a debate, but just an example of how times change.....
About 10 or 12 years ago, I recall reading an interview with Steve Smith where he said Chad was the "finest double pedal player around." With all due respect to Chad, I'm not sure anyone would say that in the era of Virgil, Mangini, etc........
Chad's a great player, he smokes...aft all, his resume includes Zappa & Holdsworth AWA many others...

mja's right...but "back in the day," Chester Thompson & esp. Bozzio used to be the "kings," doing some nice DB stuff, incldg rudiments & rudimentally-based patterns...but in this day of Virg/Mang/Minnem; well, you know...
But Chad's still "bad" nevertheless....

Chad's solo efforts, Forty Reasons, and Scream, are good showcases for his playing. I like his ideas, and how he incorporates the splashes/bells into his playing. Funny about Steve Smith's remark, however.
I remember an MD feature, "Steve Smith on....", where they "blindfold" a guy, and let him guess who plays on various tracks (you all know what I'm talking about). When they played a tune with Chad on it, Steve said he thought that Chad's vocabulary was a bit limited. Kind of surprised me.
Yeah, Chad plays on the title track, Metal Fatigue, Funnels, Devil Take the Hindmost. You can tell his signature double bass lick, which alternates four strokes between the kicks and snares. He's got a real nice feel to his playing.
I remember seeing him with Holdsworth, in 91, right after Chad's Forty Reasons came out, and they did "Tell Me", off it. I was blown away. They had Skoolie Vernagen (? spelling, who else knows this guy?) on bass, Steve Hunt on keys, and Alan was of course amazing. The dude I drug along with me had no clue who these dudes were, while I was ranting over every tune.
Actually, Chad was a bit indulgent, with a constant solo from the count off through to the end, but I enjoyed the playing. They actually lost each other for a few beats, and I remember seeing Chad smile at the bass player, while they found where one was again.
I think you might be referring to Sculi Sverisson, Dave [pronounced "Skully," "Skew-lee," or sometimes "Skoolee"?]...i saw that same tour..was great...Sculi was squinting & making those intense concentration faces as he hadnt had the gig too long & Chad was "goin' out there in L field" quite a bit...SV would peek open an eye every N&T just to look at CW's hats [img]wink.gif[/img] [time on the 8th's]...CW was over the top for that show, but it was an enjoyable experience in overindulgence [img]wink.gif[/img] ...his time is perfunctory...

His use of the little bells is indeed "schweet"....

Actually from what I remember about that article was that Smith was referring to Chad's playing with Zappa and maybe some earlier Holdsworth stuff. He listened to the track and commented that it sounded similar to Cobham and was surprised by his depth of vocabulary.(it was the same article in which Smith stated that Will Calhoun's feel was "suspect" on the first Living Colour album.) OUCH!!!
I would definitely second your suggestions about his solo work. For that matter, his work with Holdsworth is pretty outstanding. Very nice stuff.
I have an Allan Holdsworth guitar book where Allan briefly talks about Chad and Jeff Berlin not getting along with each other. Have you guys heard anything about this?
